Start with the destination, not an upscale multiplier
Record the final placement, crop, pixel dimensions, viewing distance, file format, color space, transparency, and file-size limit before processing. A social crop, ecommerce detail image, presentation slide, and print layout do not need the same source dimensions or finishing path.
Keep resizing separate from repair. Resizing changes pixel dimensions; repair may denoise, deblur, sharpen, reconstruct, or generate detail. An image can need one without needing the other, and stacking both by default makes the result harder to verify.
Qualify the source before asking software to invent detail
Inspect the original at 100% and at the intended display size. Identify compression blocks, soft edges, aliasing, noise, weak texture, and missing resolution separately from a wrong face, hand, product shape, label, logo, reflection, shadow, or composition.
Upscaling is appropriate only after the important structure is accepted. If a source does not contain trustworthy identity or product evidence, a sharper derivative cannot certify what the missing detail should have been. Return structural failures to generation, photography, compositing, or controlled retouching.
- Preserve the untouched source and its approval state.
- Mark facts that cannot change: identity, anatomy, spelling, geometry, color, material, and claims.
- Choose representative test crops for skin, hair, hands, text, product edges, textures, and shadows.
- Record the real delivery requirement rather than treating maximum resolution as the goal.
Run the smallest reversible test
Process one representative crop before the complete image. Compare a simple resize, a conservative enhancement, and a localized repair when those paths are available. Change one variable at a time so the reviewer can identify whether denoise, sharpening, scale, model choice, or generative strength caused the improvement or defect.
Use the lowest intervention that satisfies the delivery need. Larger scale factors and stronger generative settings can make an image look busier while changing pores, eyelashes, fabric weave, small lettering, packaging seams, or background patterns. Apparent sharpness is not the same as preserved evidence.
Compare high-risk regions at matched scale
Review the source and processed version side by side at the same on-screen size, then inspect both at 100%. A larger image can appear better simply because it is displayed differently. Matched comparisons reveal whether edges, texture, tonal transitions, and small features actually improved.
Check faces and hands for beautification or invented anatomy. Check products for altered geometry, typography, logo placement, color, materials, closures, reflections, and scale. Look for waxy smoothing, repeated pore patterns, crunchy halos, false grain, smeared hair, tiled texture, and sharpening around text or silhouettes.
Accept a delivery file, not an enhancement preview
Export every required derivative, open it independently, and inspect it at its real destination size. Confirm dimensions, crop, compression, color, transparency, file name, and the approved high-risk regions. A working preview is not delivery evidence.
Keep the source master, accepted derivative, settings or processing notes, reviewer, and known limitations together. When a defect remains material or a factual detail cannot be verified, hold the image rather than describing generated texture as recovered truth.

Image Upscale Acceptance Matrix
Complete these gates with the source and processed version side by side. Enlargement is acceptable only when it preserves approved facts while meeting a named delivery need.
| Decision gate | Record | Test | Accept when | Reject or return when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Output contract | Final use, pixel dimensions, crop, file format, color space, transparency, and file-size limit. | Create a delivery-size preview before choosing an enlargement or enhancement method. | The requested output is explicit and the source has enough usable structure for that destination. | The team is enlarging by habit, or the final size, crop, and viewing condition are still unknown. |
| Source qualification | Original file, generation or camera source, current dimensions, compression history, and approved facts. | Inspect the source at 100% and at final display size for blur, compression, aliasing, and structural errors. | Identity, anatomy, product geometry, text, materials, and composition are already fundamentally correct. | The source contains a wrong face, hand, label, logo, product shape, reflection, or other factual defect. |
| Conservative test | Tool, model or mode, scale factor, strength, denoise, sharpening, masks, and output version. | Process one representative crop and change one control at a time before running the complete image. | The smallest effective intervention improves delivery readiness without redrawing approved structure. | A stronger pass only creates the appearance of detail or makes the test impossible to compare. |
| Identity and anatomy | Approved face, hairline, skin state, hands, accessories, asymmetry, and any consent boundary. | Compare eyes, teeth, pores, hair, ears, fingers, jewelry, and silhouette beside the approved source. | Recognizable features remain stable and texture does not become waxy, repeated, or unnaturally sharp. | The process beautifies, ages, smooths, invents pores, changes expression, or repairs anatomy by guessing. |
| Product, text, and material | Reference pack, approved spelling, logo placement, geometry, color, texture, closure, and surface finish. | Review labels, typography, seams, edges, patterns, reflections, shadows, and scale at matched zoom. | The result preserves the product evidence and material behavior visible in the approved source. | Letters mutate, logos drift, patterns repeat, edges halo, or the material changes category or finish. |
| Final delivery | Accepted version, reviewer, export settings, derivative list, limitations, and retained source master. | Open every encoded derivative independently and inspect it at its real destination size. | Each file opens cleanly, matches the accepted comparison, and is clearly named for its intended use. | Only the working preview passes, compression reveals defects, or the package hides an unresolved limitation. |
This matrix supports production review. It does not recover verified detail absent from the source, clear rights, approve product claims, or replace human comparison of the final file.
